soulmate au - waking up on the morning of your eighteen birthday with your soulmates birthday on your chest
He woke on the morning of his eighteenth birthday with a heavy feeling on his chest. He’d spent years, now, awaiting the moment. Rick remembered clearly the day he’d first learned of soulmates; of how common they were. And then they were some that weren’t graced with those special dates inevitably died.
He grew up without a father, but when he was thirteen and forced to sit through those sex-ed talks, he knew of the process of his conception. There had to be an awkward pause when he’d asked his mother and she’d then proceeded to tell him about the one-night encounter she’d had with her soulmate.
"You have the same birthday as him," she confessed one day, some day later. When he’d asked what she meant, she’d lifted her shirt and pressed her digits into the black ink on her skin.
He pushed off the bed and then stepped in front of the mirror. He’d purposefully wore a shirt the night before, needed that extra moment to compose himself when he woke up. Lifting it up slowly, he found the black ink near his side, just beneath his breast bone.
